National Feast of Lanterns 2009, Autumn Newsletter 2008

Welcome to the first newsletter for the 2009 National Feast of Lanterns.

In 2005 Chiltern Region set up a ‘Site Finding’ sub committee to start looking for suitable sites for the NFOL 2009. Although we were given several sites to look at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire soon became the obvious choice.

In 2005 the site finding committee were re-organised into the NFOL organising committee following which most of the other officers posts were filled. As with any large team of people, we have had one or two casualties along the way, but in the main the committee have held together.

In July 2005 negotiations were set up with Blenheim Palace about holding the event in their grounds with the contract finally being approved and signed in July of this year.

Extensive negotiations and requests were made to the National Council during 2006 to be allowed to move the date to be within the school holidays. This was eventually agreed and the date was set for 20th-23rd August 2009. In 2007 further requests were made to National Council to extend the event through to the Monday which was agreed late 2007 and therefore the date for the event is now 20th-24th August 2009.

Towards the end of 2007, the theme for the Mardi Gras and Street scenes was agreed as “TIME TRAVEL” and the logo at the head of this newsletter was adopted.

Several visits have been made to Blenheim by most of the officers and arrangements for traffic, water, sanitation etc are well in hand. The preliminary site layout has been drawn up with a capacity for up to 6,000 units.

This event for is also being promoted as a second National Youth Rally with additional entertainment being organised for the Club’s Youth Section.

The entertainments programme is nearing completion.

The initial budget was submitted to the management committee in August and returned with a few comments which have now been addressed and re-submitted.

Places for the working party are now being allocated and if anyone is interested in coming along to assist in setting the site up, please contact:
